Kevin reflects (24/01/2012)

Kevin Innalls saw his team defeated for the third time since taking over the reins at Bath Road.

Reflecting on the game at Weston super Mare on Saturday, the head coach said: “Of course it was disappointing to lose, because we wanted a bit more out of the game than we got, but I think we caught Weston on bit of a rebound after a few poor results. This was a local derby and they came out with all guns blazing.”

“We made far too many errors and had two yellow cards so we were down to 14 men for 20 minutes of the game, which we can’t afford to do. We were put under pressure by their defence and made too many mistakes.”

Talking about what his plans for the two sessions ahead of Saturday’s big home game against Oxford Harlequins, Kevin said: “This week we have got a lot of work to do in our training sessions. We need to work on our continuity and ball retention, get defence a little bit tighter again because we slipped off a few tackles.”

“These are all things that we have been working on but we really need to hammer them home.”

“We are in a difficult situation, but as I said to the lads after the game we have got to stop making excuses, get out on the training park and work hard and that hard work will hopefully build us some results.”

Looking ahead to Saturday’s match Kevin said: “The game at home against Oxford Harlequins on is massive for us. We have targeted five or six must win games and this is one of them.”

“We can’t keep on making excuses we just have to get out there on Saturday and perform and come away with the points, it’s as simple as that.”

“If we want to stand any chance of survival now in this league then Oxford Harlequins at home is one of those must win games. They are not going to lay down because they are in a similar position and can be caught up in the relegation zone as well.”

Rob Allen suffered an injury to his hand at Weston about which Kevin said: “Unfortunately we had quite a serious injury to Rob Allen, who has broken some bones in his hand and he could be out for the rest of the season. He is such an important part of our team so it would be a great shame if he is missing for the rest of the season.”

Weston-super-Mare 30 - B&A RFC 8 (21/01/12)

Match report by Tony Pomeroy

Apologies for the late publication of this report.

In the first minutes of the game both sides played the expansive game looking for a quick score but it was the home side first on the scoreboard when, following a Bridgwater infringement at a tackle, home centre James MacKay kicked a routine 23m penalty.
Bridgwater hit back and patient recycling of the ball following an attacking lineout saw second row, Rob Thompson, crash over the line with a number of defenders hanging on. Surprisingly, Sam Osborne was unable to convert.

The latest from Kevin Innalls (16/01/2012)

Despite losing out to Old Patesians in his first home game in charge acting head coach Kevin Innalls was in upbeat mood.

"Of course I'm disappointed that we lost out against Old Pats, but a lot of positive things came out of the game and we were in it and competing right up until the end, which you have to be to have any chance of winning."

Kevin went on: "It was good to see a lot of things that we had worked on in training, just a slightly different style of play, coming to fruition on Saturday. Our defence was a lot better. Our running was better and we were
taking the ball at a bit of pace. We have just got to get out on the training pitch, keep working hard and make sure we finish off our opportunities."

Kevin Innalls reflects (10/01/12)

Earlier this week Bridgwater and Albion’s new acting head coach reflected on his first game in charge at Chinnor on Saturday, where although his side was beaten 71-12 they were very far from disgraced.
“Of course it was very disappointing to lose at Chinnor on Saturday but in the context of things I didn’t think that it was too bad. There were some positives that we can take out the game but there is obviously still a
lot of work to do.”

ALBION OLD BOYS SADDENED BY DEATH OF THEIR COLLEAGUE JOHN “PLUM” REDMAN

Many former Bridgwater & Albion players whose careers started back in the late 1950’s will have been saddened by the news of the death of one of their colleagues and stalwarts, John “Plum” Redman recently.  John was a prop of the old school variety, in that he always considered that his principal job in a rugby football side was to enable his side to win their ball at the scrum and to deny the opposition.

U14's - High Spirits See Albion Through

Bridgwater & Albion U14’s are through to the next round of the county cup, after beating Hornets U14’s 36-15.

To begin off with, spectators did not see this coming as Hornets started strongly. Their rucking was better and the hands were out classing the Bridgwater defence. Within 5 minutes Bridgy found themselves behind, 5-0. With Hornets dominating for the first 15 minutes and Albion rarely getting out their 22, things looked a bit worrying.

However, the Bridgwater last year may have rolled over and died, but not today. Albion knew if they played with self-belief and confidence they were capable. Sure enough Albion’s confidence slowly started to grow, rucking, passing and scrummaging superbly. Eventually Albion’s hard worked paid off with a converted try making it 7-5.

C'mon you Bridgy Boys!

Bridgwater & Albion United 0 v Clevedon 38

Match report by Lindsay Carver

The visit to Clevedon was always going to be a “difficult ask” for Bridgwater’s depleted United XV and so it proved as they capitulated tamely against opponents who had also defeated them in the home tie earlier in the season.

Bridgwater & Albion United 22 v Walcot OB 2nds 3

Match Report by Lindsay Carver

Bridgwater United welcomed in the new year with a patchy victory against under strength opponents at Bath Road on Saturday. Walcot started the game without a recognised front row so the scrummage was uncontested throughout, much to the annoyance of Albion's powerhouse pack. Despite losing lock Doug Page Symonds through a training injury on Thursday night Albion were welcoming back Nick Ball at prop and a big performance was anticipated from the "lumpy boys" up front.

Bridgwater & Albion United 59 v Yatton 17

Match Report by Lindsay Carver

Bridgwater second string returned to winning ways with a 9 try demolition of lowly Yatton at Bath Road on Saturday. Taking advantage of the howling gale that blew down the pitch United were able to dominate territorially and Yatton's defence had no answer to some direct running from the backs.

BARFC Colts 0 - 29 Taunton Colts

Match Report will follow shortly.

The scoreline is in no way a reflectation of the actual match. BARFC Colts played a excellent game against a stronger and older team.

B&A RFC 15 - 22 Old Patesians

Match report by Tony Pomeroy

Old Patesians did the double over Bridgwater & Albion in a game that did little to bring warmth to the smallish crowd

Old Patesians will rue not getting a bonus point as they were in control for much of the game. The visitors dominated possession and territory but could not really break the Bridgwater resolve. Old Pats' number 8, Halotti Molitika, ran powerfully from the base of many scrums and was the stand-out player of the game.

Bridgwater were missing Jake Childs who will possibly miss the rest of the season with a chest injury received in training. He was replaced at flanker by Ollie Dunn, normally a hooker. They also rang the changes among the backs with James Kerry and Ashley Pippard being replaced by Matt House and Roger Drabble with consequential positional changes.

Chinnor 71 - 12 B&A RFC

Match report by Tony Pomeroy

On the face of it, this was a hammering for Bridgwater, but the score does not tell the whole story. The final three Chinnor tries of the game, in the last ten minutes, all stemmed from Bridgwater losing possession deep in the home 22 with the home side breaking out and moving the length of the field. They gave the home side nineteen points that, on another day, could equally easily have been credited to the visitors.

After the game, referee, Simon Walker, and many of the Chinnor supporters were fulsome in their praise of the Bridgwater efforts.

B&ARFC Coaching Changes (4/01/12)

Bridgwater & Albion RFC announce changes to the club coaching panel for the 1st XV squad, effective immediately.
Head Coach, Chris Heal, has been relieved of his duties by the Club Executive Committee with immediate effect.

The club wish to place on record their thanks for all the work put into the club by Chris Heal and recognise that his efforts were hampered by a lack of fiscal resources. He was responsible for giving many young players a chance to develop their rugby skills in the hectic environment of senior league rugby.

Former player and coach, Kevin Innalls, has taken over as acting Head Coach with assistance from the incumbent assistant, Geoff Sluman, Matt Hastie, a player currently on the injured list, and Darren Crompton, currently a player with Bristol RFC.

Other coaches may be drafted in to assist as the season progresses.

The club are grateful to Kevin Innalls for taking on this role and appreciate that, given the current league position, he has a Herculean task if the club are to maintain their status in National League Division 3 SW.
