Nick's Natter - A Quick Chat With Nick Hill

Bridgwater and Albion coach Nick Hill may have been disappointed with the final result of his teams game against Canterbury at College Way on Saturday, but he had nothing but praise for the way that the boys performed.

“Before the game I just told them to go out and enjoy themselves, try as hard as they could and play as well as possible because if they did that then the crowd would get right behind them- and that is exactly what they did,” said Nick.

“We had several people playing out of position - like Jake Childs who is an ex Plymouth player who has joined us from Taunton. He is an open side player but was in the centre who did exceptionally well on Saturday and is proving to be a great acquisition to the club.”

“Young Will Webster, who is only a youngster who has played his rugby at Kings College, he also played out of position, but he is very keen to play. Another who did well was Dominik Griffin who really stepped up the mark against Canterbury and showed just what he could do.”

Nick paid tribute to the way that the team performed against a side in the upper reaches of the table.

“I was really proud of the way that the boys played and everyone who was out on the field showed that they were dedicated to the cause, which is what we need to have now at Bridgy and I thought that we were a bit unlucky not to win the game.”

He went on: “Although we are bottom of the league we have got a really good mood amongst the squad and everybody is feeling really buoyant. I think that this is being reflected in the way that we are playing our rugby.”

“The way that the team played against Canterbury showed exactly what we are capable of when we put our heart and soul into something.”

The coach also paid tribute to acting skipper Steve Hunt, who was carrying out the captains duties for the third successive week.

“Steve Hunt is a really good lad- he works really hard and makes a good captain. All the lads like him and he is good to work with- there is no edge to him whatsoever and he is totally committed to the cause of Bridgwater.”

“We can’t change the past and what has gone on. We need to draw a line under it and move forward and people like ‘Hunty’ just go out there and get on with it and they are the sort of players who we want at the club now.”

Nick also singled out the performance of Matt Hastie who re-joined Bridgy from near neighbours Taunton earlier this season.

“Matt played very well for us against Canterbury and he has got that Aussie mentality and wants to win everything- which is what we need right now. We may be at the bottom but we are trying to do something about it.”

The coach went on: “Despite the defeat everybody felt in a good mood afterwards which makes it easier for everyone. The supporters as always played a major part in helping the boys do so well against Canterbury and we would all like to thank them for the part that they play.”

Nick concluded: “We may be down but we are very far from out of it-all of the coaches felt very proud of the way that the boys played against Canterbury. They certainly didn’t let us down at all, and if we had been told that they would play like they did before the game then we would have all been happy to have taken it!”
