The Captain's Log - some words from Steve Hunt

Bridgy skipper Steve Hunt was clearly delighted by the way that his new look team performed against Brixham on Saturday to give the boys a victory to celebrate.

Talking about the game Steve said: “The result is a bit of a shock to me and during the game I kept on looking up at the scoreboard and saw that we had more points- which I am not used to, but it was great to get a win under our belts and will give us some good confidence going forward.”

Bridgwater and Albion captain already looking forward to the new season

The new rugby season may still be more than two months away but for Steve Hunt who has been appointed as Bridgwater and Albion captain for 2010-11 the campaign just can’t come soon enough.

Hunt, who is ‘Bridgy’ through and through, has endured a rough ride since taking over the reins at College Way mid way through last season following the departure of skipper when Ben Purcell and a number of the other senior players at the club.

However despite the difficulties that he inherited Hunt managed to retain team morale create a strong team ethic among the players who remained, as well as helping to oversee the introduction of a number of very promising youngsters into the side.

Nick Hill and B&A RFC - Press Release

Bridgwater and Albion RFC and their coach, Nick Hill, would like to correct any misunderstandings that may have arisen following misreported comments in local and regional press this week.

Nick Hill is not seeking, as reported, an urgent meeting with the club’s rugby committee.  In fact, as Head Coach, Nick Hill has a seat on that committee.  The Chairman of the rugby committee and the 1st XV manager both work very closely with Nick Hill and all three are in constant communication.  All three are committed to working together for the benefit of the club and to ensure that the club has sufficient playing resources to compete in whatever league Bridgwater & Albion will be playing in next season.

Nick's Natter - A Quick Chat With Nick Hill

Bridgwater and Albion coach Nick Hill may have been disappointed with the final result of his teams game against Canterbury at College Way on Saturday, but he had nothing but praise for the way that the boys performed.

“Before the game I just told them to go out and enjoy themselves, try as hard as they could and play as well as possible because if they did that then the crowd would get right behind them- and that is exactly what they did,” said Nick.

Raffle ticket John celebrating his Silver Jubilee! raffle_ticket_john

Spare a thought for John and Chris Purdy, who for many people as they enter the ground at College Way are the happy smiling faces who try to see them raffle tickets for the half-time draw at Bridgwater and Albion.

On Saturday afternoons ever since December 12th poor old John and Chris and their helper Sheila Horswell have had to sit at home and twiddle their thumbs because they haven’t had any spectators to sell their tickets too because every game has been called off.

B&A RFC V Richmond Postponed

BRIDGWATER and Albion will have to wait another week at least before they can return to action after their away game at Richmond was postponed because of the frozen conditions.

This postponement means that the Albion first team has not played since they beat Westcombe Park on Saturday December 12th, which was five weeks ago.

The game has been re-arranged and will now take place on Saturday March 20th at the Athletic Ground.

Commenting on the postponement ‘Bridgy’ coach Nick Hill said: “To a certain degree the fact that this game has been called off is no bad thing because we have been unable to train fully since the bad weather has set in.”

Steve Smith Speaks

Bridgwater and Albion chairman Steve Smith talks about recent developments at the club.

In common with many other clubs at the same level and even above them in the National League structure Bridgwater and Albion are finding paying players at the existing levels of their contracts an increasing burden.

With this in mind Steve Smith, the Club Chairman, met with the players just before Christmas to tell them that they would all be paid at the same reduced level for the foreseeable future.

A fond farewell to Albion stalwart Gordon Barrett

Article by Mike Berry

Members and all rugby football supporters in Somerset and the West Country are mourning the death of Gordon C Barrett who passed away on 30 November aged 86.  Gordon’s efforts on and off the field of play are steeped in Bridgwater & Albion and Somerset County Rugby annals.

Gordon was born in Cannington and like many other Albion footballers learnt his rugby at Dr Morgan’s Grammar School.  After leaving school, he joined the Royal Navy where he was Petty Officer in the Fleet Air Arm.  Whilst serving his country he played for various Navy XVs and for the Combined Services.  During wartime rugby football in the Bridgwater area masqueraded under the ‘Barbarians’ banner and Bridgwater & Albion re-emerged soon after and Gordon played for these sides.  He was still in the Navy and played simultaneously for his home club; for Devonport Services; and the Royal Navy Air Command.  In 1946 / 47 he was on standby as reserve for England International trials.  Albion’s excellent Centenary handbook records Gordon’s prowess through their teams in the late 1940s / early 1950s during which time Bridgwater scored some notable victories over some famous clubs.
